Marks and Spencer is the default British Christmas shop and has been for about a century. Most people in this country have eaten something from there on the 25th, and a good number of them have worn something from there as well.

The festive knitwear sits where you would expect: well made, sensibly cut, a bit more wool in it than the novelty rail, and sized with the consistency of a retailer that has been fitting the nation for generations – which is the single most useful thing about buying here. If you know your M and S size, you can order a Christmas jumper without a second thought, and that is not true of most of this list.

The range covers the lot. Proper Fair Isle and cable knits for anybody who wants a jumper rather than a joke. Novelty designs with pom-poms and light-up panels for anybody who does not. Children’s sets, matching family pyjamas, and a gifting range that solves a great many December problems in one go. Stock lands early and the best children’s sizes go first, so November is the moment. The sales after Christmas are worth a look too.
