It is worth occasionally remembering whose birthday it actually is. The nativity Christmas jumper is a small corner of this site and a rather charming one – stable scenes, stars over Bethlehem, wise men, and a modest number of jumpers making the perfectly reasonable point about whose party this was originally.
The designs fall into two groups. There are the genuinely reverent ones: a nativity scene knitted as a Fair Isle panel, a star motif, a stable in silhouette. These are quiet, traditional and the obvious choice for a carol service or a church do, where a flashing reindeer would be a misjudgement. And then there is the birthday joke, which has been made on knitwear many times and which, done with warmth rather than smugness, still raises a smile.
This is one of our smallest sections, because nativity knitwear is a niche and the high street mostly does not bother. What is here tends to be from the independent makers rather than the big retailers, which also means it is often the better made. If the understated religious end is what you want, it is also worth a look through the Fair Isle and snowflake sections, where star motifs turn up regularly.
