At some point in the last decade prosecco stopped being a drink and became a personality, and the knitwear industry noticed immediately. This is the section for jumpers about fizz: bottles, flutes, bubbles, and a very large number of slogans concerning how much of it a person intends to get through between now and the new year.
It is a proper modern addition to the festive canon. Reindeer and snowmen have been on jumpers for forty years; the prosecco jumper is barely ten, and it shows in the designs – these are slogan-led, bright, often in pink or gold, and squarely aimed at a Christmas that happens in a pub or a kitchen rather than around a tree. Bottles rendered as a Fair Isle repeat are a particular delight, because the format is so traditional and the subject so firmly not.
They make excellent presents for the person who has a favourite glass, and they are a reliable hit at a girls’ night or a work do. Worth knowing that the sizing on slogan knits runs small more often than it runs large, so if you are between sizes go up. Have a look at the funny section too, where a lot of the drink-related gags overlap.
